The fourth digital Zine is 76 pages long and the topic is climbing, specifically about an attempt to climb the tallest face in the world, the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat in 1988.
I’ve been thinking about the expedition described in this piece quite a lot recently. After retelling a small part of the story in conversation with Steve House for his ‘Voice of the Mountains’ podcast I began feeling comfortable with the idea of writing more about it than I already have. After all, Jim Martin declared that, it “ranks with the greatest survival epics,” and it sure felt that way in the days, months, and years after it happened.
Barry wrote of the events in exquisite detail in the opening chapters of his book, “The Calling”, and reading that helped me understand that many of my own memories have faded over time. As I began to scan 35mm slides and clean up the resulting digital images some of those memories began to clarify. I realized that his and mine differed on several important points so if you’re familiar with his book you will notice a few discrepancies here. As an experiment, I decided to put a PDF together, perhaps as rehearsal for something bigger.
When you place an order you will receive confirmation and I will receive notice. Shortly thereafter, I will send to your email address a password-protected PDF that you may download and view offline. This is NOT automated therefore not immediate.
