The third digital Zine is 34 pages long and the topic is climbing, specifically about a trip to the Alps in 1984. The main text and the long photo captions are about a route I soloed on the Monch, an attempt on the Eiger, and my subsequent journey down to Chamonix.
“This began as a simple exercise, “rewrite an essay from 1984.” It was the first one a magazine ever published and I was ecstatic at the time. I transcribed the original and posted it on Substack as, “Solitary Sometimes” with a subtitle, “No writer springs fully formed from the earth,” an admission of how badly written it was.
I was not prepared for the journey that rewriting it led me to take. I scanned some slides and diligently cleaned the images because some of them were worth a hundred words. I wanted to place the essay in context so used other images and long captions to flesh out a story that I am not yet prepared to fully write. It felt like good, and useful practice although I’m not certain where it may lead, or what I’m doing ... perhaps rehearsing a memoir but maybe just stuck in a period of nostalgia. Time will tell.”
